How my thriller trailer challenges and represents gender stereotypes

When planning our thriller trailer we had to think carefully about the characters we chose and how we wanted them to play their roles. In order to help us decide what roles we needed in our trailer we analysed other film trailers such as seven and the silence of the lambs. This helped us to identify where the film had challenged genre stereotypes and where the film had represented stereotypes.
In our trailer we both represented and challenged the gender stereotypes. This is firstly shown how the lead role is played by a female, her character is the detective who is trying to solve the case. Her character appears experienced, stuck up, and in competition with the male journalist. This challenges stereotypes as the lead role is usually played by a dominant male, where as in our trailer our lead role is a female. Females are usually shown as weak and the victims to crime in thriller trailers however, having a female role appear confident and full of herself challenges these stereotypes.
Our trailer also challenges stereotypes as the journalist is played by a young male, usually in thriller films these roles are played by a middle aged man with experience. However, we chose to challenge this stereotype and have a younger male play this role, this also makes the detective who is a female with experience more confident I her role as she feels she is above the journalist and therefore over rule him.
However, we did also represent AND challenge particular stereotypes by choosing our survivor character to be a young female. By having a young female play this role we are representing stereotypes because there are scenes in our trailer where we show her crying, and screaming for help, this shows the stereotypical view that females are emotional and usually shown as weak. However, this role also challenges stereotypes to show her as perhaps strong as she is the only survivor in her family.
My trailer also represents gender stereotypes, this is shown a our falsely accused prisoner is a man. Statistics show that men commit more crime then females, this is usually shown in thriller films as usually the crime is committed by a male, therefore by having the falsely accused prisoner played by a male this represents genre stereotypes. This stereotype is shown again where the voice on the phone (the killer) is a mans voice, this also represents genre stereotypes as the killer is also a male.
